A baby furniture crib may seem like the best place for baby when it’s time for their nap or to get to sleep for the evening. However, the crib can sometimes be the most dangerous place for your child! If you take care, then your baby will be safe; skip these important precautions and you may be placing your baby in danger.
Parents and other caretakers need to follow good crib safety tips to keep the child protected from harm.
The first important thing is to remember to always lay infants on their backs. This will prevent the infant from choking. Also, make sure that the crib has a tight fitted sheet over the crib mattress. Crib sheets that are not the correct size will come undone and could possibly result in the choking or suffocation of the infant.
While it may be fun and decorative to place all kinds of pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, comforters, and bumper pads on the inside of the crib, it is not advisable to place it all in there when the infant is placed inside. If you are going to have these things inside the crib throughout the day that is fine, but you have to make sure that it is all removed when you lay the child down to rest or sleep.
As far as the actual baby furniture cribs themselves, it is important to make sure that the slats of the crib are not too far apart. There should be no more then 2 and 3/8 inches of space in between the slats. It is also important to make sure that the wooden cribs are splinter free and that all of the joints and the parts fit together perfectly and tightly. If the crib is painted, then it must be lead free paint with no cracks or paint that is peeling away.
And no matter how cute it looks, avoid placing decorative cut outs on the end panels on the inside of the crib. These fall off and the infant could choke on them. It is also extremely important to make sure that the mattress is the same size as the crib so that arms and legs do not end up trapped in the crib. The side of the crib that lowers should be hand operated and it should always be able to be locked into place without a fear of it unintentionally snapping apart which very well could harm the baby.
By following these basic precautions, you can make sure that the crib your baby sleeps in is a safe place for them to rest. It’s a mistake to ignore the possible dangers which can be even here in what should be the safest place in your home.
Take a few moments to inspect the crib that belongs to your baby and see if there are any improvements you could make to make it a safer place for your baby to relax.
